This post is about my poem “Broken Wing,” featured in my debut poetry collection “Lost in Life’s Ocean.”
Originally inspired by a song by New Jersey rapper Joe Budden, the poem is about living through depression and the struggles it causes. I wrote it to showcase the complex and debilitating feelings that occur, from shame to hopelessness and more.
It was featured on popular book website BookRiot.com in a post called “30 Depression Poems That Are Raw, Real and Powerful” and has elicited passionate support from my readers.
From college students across the country who’ve used the poem in their classes to artists inspired to make songs, create posts, videos and spoken word interpretations of their own, it’s really connected with people. An amazing artist from Iran named Golnaz even created a hand-drawn sketch of two hands coming together, made up entirely of the words from “Broken Wing.”
The support has been incredible and I’m glad that my words can connect with and help others not feel so alone, lost, confused or ashamed. I’ll be offering special signed prints very soon.
